Architecture Month

Each April AIA Iowa celebrates Iowa Architects and Architecture by requests a proclamation from the Governor to declare 'Architecture Month' across the State of Iowa in recognition of the dedication and importance of great design and architecture across the state. In addition, throughout the month, events and programs take place across the state to showcase the design work of our local architects.

People's Choice

Every April AIA Iowa makes the public the jury with the People's Choice Award Competition. Firms from all across the state submit their projects to be showcased in this awards program. Voting for your favorite project is open the whole month of April. Check out all the projects in the People's Choice Award competition on IowaArchitecture.org. Members of the public can vote once a day per project for the entire month. Winners will be announced at the very end of the month. Who will get bragging rights this year?

Local Events

The AIA Iowa Chapter has 5 Iowa Sections located across the state that activate and excite the community about architecture.Check-out our calendar of events page to learn more about events happening in your area.

Citizen Architect Program

The general public's view of architects and AIA Iowa is shaped first and foremost by how the individual AIA members interact with their clients and their communities. The AIA Iowa Public Relations Committee introduced this program in 2008 to recognize members who represent AIA's values to their communities through public service. This program is a recognition program bestowed upon all members who meet qualification criteria, and is intended to encourage all AIA Iowa members to actively engage in their communities and share in the AIA mission. Learn more about the program and submit an application or nominate someone here.

Each member enrolled in the program is recognized at the AIA Iowa Annual Convention and in their local newspaper. We encourage all AIA Iowa Architects who serve their communities to participate.

Canstruction® is using one can of food as a catalyst for change. One Can® to represent the building blocks of massive sculptures. One Can® to prove that every act of kindness makes a difference. Since 1992, Canstruction® has contributed over 17.5 million pounds of food to community food banks demonstrating that we can win the fight against hunger.

Canstruction® combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed the hungry. Competing teams, lead by architects and engineers, showcase their talents by designing giant sculptures made entirely out of canned food. Structures are created by stacking a variety of can sizes and shapes using the product labels as the color palette. Structurally self-supporting, the only other materials to be used are 1/4” leveling, cardboard, tape, rubber bands and wire.
