Iowa Celebrates Architecture Month in April

Events across the State Promote the Beauty and Importance of Architecture

Des Moines, Iowa (April 9, 2019) –The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter announced today the celebration of April as Iowa Architecture Month intended to exemplify the importance, beauty, and significance of architecture. Numerous statewide initiatives have been planned to celebrate this annual event, including the signing of a State Proclamation by Governor Kim Reynolds that will occur on April 9th at 3:00 PM, architectural workshops, tours, films, lecture series and the AIA Iowa People’s Choice Award.

Returning this year is the AIA Iowa People’s Choice Award designed to promote architecture and to encourage appreciation and interaction with buildings within the state. AIA Iowa invites the public to serve as the jury and to judge architecture built by Iowa architects throughout the month of April. Anyone can vote once per project per day at IowaArchitecture.org. Winners will be announced at the end of the month.

In addition to the People’s Choice Award, AIA Iowa has planned events that promote the exploration of Iowa’s architectural treasures. National Architecture week, April 21-27, is just one part of AIA Iowa’s month-long spotlight on the contributions architects make to our communities and society in general. Events occurring statewide are:

  • April 11 Central Iowa Architects Social- Des Moines
  • April 11 South East Iowa Architects Trivia Night- Cedar Rapids
  • April 13 Defining Modern Mid-Century Furniture Lecture- Des Moines
  • April 18 AIA Iowa Spring Conference – Ames
  • April 21-27 AIA Architecture Week - National
  • April 22 Iowa Architectural Foundation Eat Drink Architecture- Des Moines
  • April 24 Citizen Jane: Battle for the City Screening- Cedar Rapids
  • April 25 ISU: Film Forum North by Northwest – Ames
  • April 25 Central Iowa Architects Building Tour- Des Moines

The largest of all of April’s events will be taking place at Iowa State University’s Memorial Union on April 18. The AIA Iowa 2019 Spring Conference theme is Thought Leaders: inspired by the unique position architects hold in the decision-making process this conference’s goal is to navigate how we, as architects, execute leadership skills to motivate the implementation of new ideas, be forward thinkers and apply new technologies to inform our built surroundings. To equip our attendees with the knowledge required to orchestrate meaningful conversations with the public by understanding how projects both the AIA Iowa Spring Conference brings architects and design professionals from across the state to Ames, IA for keynotes, workshops, and networking between students and professionals. Approximately 200 attendees will attend.

Since 1857, the American Institute of Architects has represented the professional interests of America’s architects. AIA Iowa, headquartered in Des Moines, is a statewide affiliate of national AIA with nearly 1,000 members.  AIA Iowa members are committed to excellence in design and are proactive in the design of livable communities.
