Iowa Architects Elected to AIA Iowa Board of Directors

Des Moines, Iowa (January 9, 2017) – The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter (AIA Iowa), has elected several Des Moines Metro area individuals to serve on the 2017 AIA Iowa Board of Directors: Mindy Aust, AIA, Past President; Dan Drendel, AIA, Secretary; Douglas Foreshoe, AIA, Director; Deborah Hauptmann, Assoc. AIA, ISU Representative; Danielle Hermann, AIA, Second Vice President; Tonia Householder, AIA, Treasurer; Steve King, AIA, Director; Matt Ostanik, AIA, President; Justin Pagorek, AIA Iowa Student Affiliate Member, AIAS President; Kelly Paskert, AIA Iowa Allied Member, Allied Membership Director; Jarrod Siegel, Associate AIA, Associate Director; Gary Van Dyke, AIA, First Vice President/President Elect; Chris Wand, AIA, Director; Kerry Weig, AIA, Director; and Alan Wieskamp, AIA, Director.



Mindy Aust, AIA, Past President
Mindy Aust, AIA, is an Associate at Substance Architecture, a collaborative design practice based in Des Moines, Iowa. Aust graduated from Iowa State University, where she received a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) in 2001 with a minor in entrepreneurial studies. With Substance since 2005, she has developed an expertise in the design of higher education and public projects. She has contributed to projects recognized with awards for design excellence from AIA Iowa, AIA Central States Region, and AIA’s national Committee on Design (COD)/Committee on the Environment (COTE) Design Ideas Competition. Mindy is a recipient of the 2016 AIA Young Architect Award.


Dan Drendel, AIA, Secretary

Dan Drendel, AIA is Principal at Slingshot Architects, a multidisciplinary team driven by meaningful work created through personal relationships. Dan earned a Master of Architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2007 and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Southeast Missouri State University in 2001. He has also served as the Associate Director on the AIA Iowa Board, chaired the AIA Iowa Public Relations Committee, was a committee member of the AIA Iowa Emerging Professionals Committee, and is on the editorial board for the Iowa Architect magazine.


Douglas Foreshoe, AIA, Director

Douglas Foreshoe, AIA, is a principal with Bergland + Cram in Mason City, IA. Foreshoe has managed or assisted on a majority of B+Cs large projects since joining the firm in 2001. His client experience throughout Iowa and beyond ranges from healthcare and wellness to civic and education. In addition to design and project management, Foreshoe wears several hats including providing information technology support and professional quality photography for the firms finished body of work.Douglas is the 2016 North East Section President and serves on the Iowa Architectural Foundation Board.


Deborah Hauptmann, Assoc. AIA, ISU Representative

Deborah Hauptmann, Assoc. AIA, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Architecture at Iowa State University. Prior to her arrival at ISU in the Fall of 2013, she was the Director of the Delft School of Design - an internationally recognized platform for research and advanced education at the Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. Her research draws on a trans-disciplinary approach to architecture, which includes disciplines such as philosophy, cultural & media studies, the social sciences and the neurosciences. Hauptmann holds a bachelor of architecture degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a master of architecture from the University of Pennsylvania and has practiced architecture in both Europe and the US.


Danielle Hermann, AIA, Second Vice President

Danielle Hermann, AIA, is an Associate Principal at OPN Architects, Inc., located in Des Moines, Iowa. A strong advocate for diversity in the architectural field, Hermann is a founder and charter member of Iowa Women in Architecture and founder of AIA Iowa’s Diversity Committee.  Hermann was honored with a 2016 AIA Iowa Young Architects Award, and a 2013 Design Achievement Award from the Iowa State University Alumni Association and the College of Design.  Hermann received both her Bachelors of Architecture in 2001, and Masters of Architecture in 2008, from Iowa State University.


Tonia Householder, AIA, Treasurer

Tonia Householder, AIA is a Project Architect at INVISION, a planning, architecture and interiors firm that builds collaborative relationships resulting in holistic and innovative solutions for its clients and communities. 

Householder is a 2006 graduate from Iowa State University with a Bachelors of Architecture, where she continues to be actively involved in the University’s architectural community, performing studio critiques and guest reviews. Householder serves as a local representative for emerging professionals on the AIA Iowa Emerging Professionals Committee.  She has also acted as a regional representative for Iowa, participating on the AIA Central States Region Emerging Professionals Committee. In addition, she works to positively impact the architectural community by serving as a board member on the AIA Central Iowa Architects Section, promoting achievements and collaboration amongst the section.


Steve King, AIA, Director

Steve King, AIA, graduated from the University of Kansas in 1992 and has led teams on a variety of project types, including; sports venues, corporate campuses and civic buildings. His passion for historic preservation led him to his current position leading the State Historic Preservation Office of Iowa. King combines his expertise in architecture and historic preservation by overseeing the state’s efforts to identify and preserve Iowa’s historical assets.


Matt Ostanik, AIA, President

Matt Ostanik, AIA, is an architect and a technology entrepreneur.  He previously founded Submittal Exchange, a comprehensive online system for managing communications on commercial construction projects.   Ostanik received his college education from Iowa State University, a Bachelor of Architecture in 2001 and his Master of Business Administration in 2009. He has been involved within AIA Iowa as Chair and Member of the AIA Iowa Young Architects Committee, AIA Iowa Public Relations Committee, and the Iowa Architect Magazine Editorial Board. He has participated in the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute's Community Leadership Program, and he was recognized by the Des Moines Business Record as part of their 2013 Forty Under 40 class. 


Justin Pagorek, AIA Iowa Student Affiliate Member, AIAS President

Justin Pagorek is a fifth year architecture student in the Bachelor of Architecture program at Iowa State University. He is the current president of the Iowa State University Chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) as well as a Student Affiliate of the AIA. Justin was recognized by the national AIAS Board and was highlighted in August 2016 as the Chapter Leader of the Month. Additionally, Justin has previously served as chapter president and vice president and has served on the National Membership Committee.


Kelly Paskert, AIA Iowa Allied Member, Allied Membership Director

Kelli Paskert enters her first year as the AIA Iowa Allied Membership Director after serving as the Vice-Director for the previous two years. Earning her degree in Marketing from Buena Vista University in 2004, Paskert has experience in all phases of marketing, sales, business planning and strategy execution. Paskert is the Marketing & Sales Director at Skold Companies, where she has been consulting with Architects and General Contractors throughout the Midwest since 2011. Skold Companies has been providing commercial construction products and services to owners and general contractors throughout the Midwest for 25 years.


Jarrod Siegel, Associate AIA, Associate Director

Jarrod Siegel, Associate AIA, is an Architectural Intern at OPN Architects, Inc., an architecture firm recognized for its seamless blend of architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture. Prior to joining OPN, Jarrod was a LEED Specialist at the U.S. Green Building Council in Washington, D.C. and collaborated in the development of the new LEED v4 rating systems and requirements released in late 2013. He has also served multiple years on AIA Iowa’s Convention Committee, handling workshop selection. Siegel received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Iowa State University in 2007.


Gary Van Dyke, AIA, First Vice President/President Elect

Gary Van Dyke, AIA, is a Principal Architect at the West Des Moines location of Shive-Hattery, Inc., a Midwest based architecture and engineering firm with 9 offices located in 4 states that has provided single source solutions to clients with unique design services for 117 years. Van Dyke is a 1984 graduate of Iowa State University with practice experiences spanning over three decades with a current focus on healthcare architecture. He has been a member of AIA Iowa since 1985 and is presently a member of the U.S. Green Building Council, an organization dedicated to sustainable building design and construction.


Chris Wand, AIA, Director

Chris Wand is a Registered Architect in Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota, and Nebraska; NCARB Certified; and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED Accredited Professional.  He has been working in the field of architecture since graduating from Iowa State University in 1991.  He currently resides in Cedar Rapids where he works for Primus Construction, a design-build firm, and serves on the Czech Village/New Bohemia Main Street Board.  In Dubuque, he continues to serve on the Dubuque Main Street Board of Directors and the Dubuque Museum of Art Board of Trustees.  He is a former member of the Board of Directors of SaveCRHeritage, the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC) and the Dubuque Historic Preservation Commission

Kerry Weig, AIA, Director

Kerry Weig, AIA, is a Director at INVISION Architecture, Planning and Interiors, a collaborative studio of designers with offices in Des Moines and Waterloo, Iowa.  Weig graduated from Iowa State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch.) in 1998.  She has served as a volunteer on a number of AIA professional committees and community organizations including the AIA Public Relations Committee, Iowa Women in Architecture Board, State Center Development Association Board, Boys and Girls Club of Central Iowa Facilities Committee, YWCA of Des Moines Board of Directors, as well as many other positions in her community and church. Kerry is motivated by her dedication to service-to clients and teammates professionally, to her family personally, and to the communities she is involved with as a result of both. 


Alan Wieskamp, AIA, Director

Alan Wieskamp is a Project Architect and group leader in the Iowa City office of Shive-Hattery, Inc., a 117 year old Upper Mid-West based architecture and engineering firm with 9 offices located in 4 states. Alan began his career as a draftsman following graduation from Kirkwood Community College and used those skills to later attend Iowa State University and graduate with his bachelor of architecture degree. He is the co-founder of Design:sd, a non-profit design and planning facilitator for small communities in South Dakota. He was elected as the AIA150 representative for the South Dakota AIA component in 2005. He served as the SGN director for the state of South Dakota component, and he served on the AIA South Dakota board of directors for six years and served the positions of director, secretary, treasurer and vice-president/president elect.
