Iowa Celebrates Architecture Month in April


Des Moines, Iowa (April 1, 2015) – The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter announced today the celebration of April as Iowa Architecture Month exemplifying the importance, beauty, and  significance of architecture. Numerous statewide initiatives have been planned to celebrate this annual event, including the signing of a State Proclamation by Governor Terry Branstad on April 2, a statewide newspaper insert in the eight largest newspapers on April 8, architectural workshops, tours, and lecture series.


Throughout the month, AIA Iowa has planned events that promote the exploration of Iowa’s architectural treasures. National Architecture week, April 12-18, is just one part of AIA Iowa’s month long spotlight on the contributions architects make to our communities and our society in general. Events occurring statewide are:

  • Iowa State University (ISU) Department of Architecture Lecture Series- April 1
  • Historic Preservation Seminar- April 2
  • Architecture Month Proclamation Signing by the Governor- April 2 
  • Iowa Architectural Foundation (IAF) “Talk & Tour” Series- April 6 
  • Central Iowa Architects Section Ping Pong Tournament- April 9
  • IAF Spring DMPS Class: "Prairie School Architecture”- April 11
  • Dubuque Main Street Architecture Days- April 13-18

  • Spring Conference and Business Meeting- April 15

The largest of all April’s events will be taking place at Iowa State University’s Scheman Building on April 15. The 2015 Spring Conference: Exposed: Design Process brings architects and design professionals from across the state to Ames, IA for keynotes, workshops, and connecting students and professionals. This year’s theme Exposed: Design Process focuses on the unique methodology architects use to solve design problems. Approximately 200 attendees will gather to hear from keynote speakers EB Min, AIA, of Min | Day Architecture, Takashi Yanai, AIA, of Ehrlich Architects, and Snohetta Design.
