American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter Attends National Grassroots Conference

Des Moines, IA – March 3, 2015 –American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter members and staff are visiting Capitol Hill this week at the American Institute of Architects Grassroots Leadership Conference held in Washington D.C., March 4-6. Executive Director Jessica Reinert, Hon. AIA Iowa, CAE, IOM, along with individual members Joseph Tursi, AIA, Mindy Aust, AIA, Katie Harms, AIA, Jamie Malloy, AIA, and Kevin Wagner, Assoc. AIA will be visiting with several Iowa legislative offices on March 5th.

“Our goal is to connect with Legislators this week to show the importance of the architecture profession and the role architects play in Iowa communities,” said Executive Director of AIA Iowa, Jessica Reinert, CAE, IOM. “All across the state AIA Iowa members are making strides in cities to help build small businesses, create jobs, and facilitate sustainable buildings through renovation and restoration. Having the support of our legislators is necessary to continue our success.”

The group will address the four main issues of economic growth: supporting laws and regulations that help firms create jobs; design: supporting laws, policies and legislation that leads to energy efficiency, historic preservation, and tax-credits for low income housing; resilience: helping communities prepare for and respond to challenges they face including building codes, Good Samaritan legislation, and resiliency planning; and finally the future: supporting policies that invest in architects and the profession including the National Design Services Act, regulatory environments for research, and supporting pro bono and community work in underserved areas with community design centers.

In addition to legislative visits, AIA Iowa members will engage in conference workshops in advocacy, leadership, civic engagement, and repositioning.
