Des Moines Metro Architects Elected to 2014 AIA Iowa Board 


Des Moines, Iowa (January 17, 2014) – The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter (AIA Iowa), has elected several Des Moines Metro area individuals to serve on the 2014 AIA Iowa Board of Directors: Mindy Aust, AIA, Second Vice President; Curt Gear,Allied Director; Jill Goedken, AIA, Director; Danielle Hermann, AIA, Director; Matt Ostanik, AIA, Treasurer; Gregory Palermo, FAIA, Iowa State University Representative; Bobbi Jo Reiff, AIAS President; Linda Schemmel, AIA, Past President; Jenna Thompson, Assoc. AIA, Associate Director; and Gary Van Dyke, AIA, Secretary. 


Mindy Aust, AIA, 2nd Vice President

Mindy Aust, AIA is an Architect at Substance - a collaborative design practice engaged in the disciplines of Architecture, Interior Architecture, Master Planning, and Design in Des Moines, Iowa. Aust is a 2001 graduate of Iowa State University and has been with Substance since 2005. She has contributed to projects recognized with awards for design excellence from AIA Iowa and the Central States Region, as well as by the National AIA’s Committee on Design/Committee on the Environment House for an Ecologist Design Ideas Competition. In 2011, her work on the renovation of the Cedar Rapids Courthouse won a prestigious American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum as well as a GSA Design Award.  She has served on AIA Iowa’s Convention Committee and is an active member of Iowa Women in Architecture (iaWia). 


Curt Gear, Allied Director
Curt Gear enters his second year as the AIA Iowa Allied Membership Director after serving as the Vice-Director for the AIA Iowa Allied Membership for the previous two years.  He provides a gateway of connections between architects, firms, and allied members and as the director and has implemented firm visits and socials for all AIA Iowa members.  He is working to increase Allied Membership throughout all of Iowa. Gear is employed by Wells Concrete as the Business Development Director for Iowa. Wells Concrete serves architects, building owners, developers, and contractors throughout the Upper Midwest, providing them with architectural and structural precast concrete products. 


Jill Goedken, AIA, Director

Jill Goedken, AIA is a Director at INVISION- a client-centered, service-oriented architecture firm that produces outstanding design in Des Moines, Iowa.  A 1993 graduate of Iowa State University, Goedken has been an integral part of the leadership of AIA Iowa both locally with Central Iowa Architect Council and at the state level with AIA Iowa for 19 years.Goedken is a graduate of the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute and a recipient of the Business Record's Forty Under 40. As an architect, she led the design of Iowa State University's large animal hospital and is currently working on numerous healthcare facilities throughout the state. In addition to design, Goedken is a strong advocate for mentoring young architects and women in the design and construction industry. 


Danielle Hermann, AIA, Director

Danielle Hermann, AIA is a Project Architect at OPN Architects, Inc., an architecture firm recognized for its seamless blend of architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture located in Des Moines, Iowa. A strong advocate for diversity in the architectural field, Hermann is a founder and chapter member of Iowa Women in Architecture and founder of AIA Iowa’s Diversity Committee which explores relevant issues within the architectural community and assists in the development of programs and initiatives that foster and sustain cultural breadth and inclusion. She has been a part of multiple projects in the Des Moines community including current work with The Principal Financial Group, the renovation of Hoyt Sherman Place auditorium, the Salisbury House & Gardens, and Terrace Hill and was honored with a 2013 Design Achievement Award from the Iowa State University Alumni Association and the College of Design. She was also named as one of the 2012 Forty Under 40. Hermann received both her Bachelors of Architecture in 2001, and Masters of Architecture in 2008, from Iowa State University. 


Matt Ostanik, AIA, Treasurer

Matt Ostanik, AIA is a technology entrepreneur. He previously founded Submittal Exchange, a comprehensive online system for managing communications on commercial construction projects which was acquired by Textura Corporation in 2011.  Ostanik received his college -more-degrees from Iowa State University, a Bachelor of Architecture in 2001 and his Masters of Business Administration in 2009.  He has been involved within AIA Iowa as Chair and member of the AIA Iowa Young Architects Committee, AIA Iowa Public Relations Committee, and the Iowa Architect Magazine Editorial Board.  Within the community, Ostanik is Chair of the City of Dallas Center Board of Adjustment.  He has participated in the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute's Community Leadership Program, and he was recently recognized by the Des Moines Business Record as part of their 2013 Forty Under 40 class.  


Gregory Palermo, FAIA, Iowa State University Representative

Gregory Palermo, FAIA is a Professor of Architecture at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa and has been part of the ISU teaching community since 1992. Prior to his tenure at Iowa State, Palermo taught at Washington University in St. Louis, MO and has over twenty years of professional architectural practice in leadership positions. Among his many notable achievements at ISU, Palermo has earned the Iowa State University Miller Fellowship (1996-1997, 2003-2004), received the College of Design Faculty Award for Extraordinary Performance (2003), the AIA Iowa Educator Award (2007) and was the recipient of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Distinguished Professor Award. While at ISU, Palermo has served as President of the Faculty Senate, was a Big XII Faculty Fellow at Texas Tech, and co-authored Ethics and the Practice of Architecture. 


Bobbi Jo Reiff, AIAS President

Bobbi Jo Reiff is a student at Iowa State University where she will graduate with a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 2015.  She has interned at ASK Studio in Des Moines and is involved in the national and local chapters of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS). Reiff has received numerous honors for her work and academic excellence including the AIA National/AIA Iowa Merit scholarship in the Fall of 2013. 


Linda Schemmel, AIA, Past President
Linda Schemmel, AIA is currently a Planner for the City of West Des Moines, Iowa. Her work includes review of current development projects within the city along with managing redevelopment, economic development and capital improvement projects, many focused in the Historic Valley Junction area. Schemmel also maintains membership with the American Planning Association, International Code Council and serves on the Builder Advisory Council for the Center on Sustainable Communities. Prior to her work with the City, she founded Design Development Inc., an architectural firm located in Valley Junction.Schemmel joined the AIA Iowa Board of Directors in 2006. She also previously served on the West Des Moines Plan and Zoning Commission for six years, with two years as Chair. 


Jenna Thompson, Assoc. AIA, Associate Director

Jenna Thompson, Assoc. AIA is an Intern Architect for SVPA Architects Inc., an architecture, interior design, and graphic design firm in West Des Moines that believes in the philosophy "together everyone achieves more;” providing clients with solutions that are as unique as their architectural challenges. Thompson, a 2009 Iowa State University graduate, is active in her community and with AIA Iowa. She currently serves on the Board of Directors as a Chair for Iowa Women in Architecture and is an active participant in the planning committee for Central Iowa Canstruction, an annual event that combines the competitive spirit of design and architecture with a unique way to help feed the less fortunate. Thompson is serving a second term as Associate Director on the AIA Iowa Board of Directors, working with peers to enhance the Emerging Professionals programming. Thompson has been an AIA Iowa member since 2009. 


Gary Van Dyke, AIA, Secretary

Gary Van Dyke, AIA, is a Principal Architect at the West Des Moines location of Shive-Hattery, Inc., a Midwest based architecture and engineering firm with 9 offices located in 4 states that has provided single source solutions to clients with unique design services for 117 years. Van Dyke is a 1984 graduate of Iowa State University with practice experiences spanning over three decades with a current focus on healthcare architecture. Van Dyke is also on the Board of Trustees for the Iowa Architectural Foundation where he serves on the Branding Committee. He has been a member of AIA Iowa since 1985 and is presently a member of the U.S. Green Building Council, an organization dedicated to sustainable building design and construction.

Douglas Foreshoe, AIA, Director

Douglas Foreshoe, AIA is a principal with Bergland + Cram (B+C) in Mason City, IA.  Foreshoe has managed or assisted on a majority of B+C’s large projects since joining the firm in 2001.  His experience throughout Iowa and beyond ranges from healthcare and wellness to civic and education.  In addition to design and project management, Foreshoe wears several hats including providing information technology support and professional quality -more-photography for the firm’s finished body of work. 


Nathan Kalaher, AIA, President

Nathan Kalaher, AIA is a co-founder of his architecture firm, PLaN Architecture located in Sioux City. Kalaher is actively involved in the architecture community playing an instrumental role in the development of ISU Design West, developed as a part of Sioux City’s Iowa Great Places program. PLaN’s services include commercial design, renovation of historic buildings, sustainable design, educational facilities, site design, and residential design. Kalaher is a 2002 graduate of Iowa State University’s Bachelor of Architecture program and a 2006 graduate of Cornell University’s Master of Architecture program. 


John Phung, AIA, Director

John Phung, AIA is an Architect at Neumann Monson Architects- a firm focusing on quality architecture, the client-architect relationship, and environmental stewardship, located in Iowa City, Iowa. Phung is a graduate of California State Polytechnic University. He has been with Neumann Monson since 2012 and has been involved with numerous non-profit organizations.  He is an active member of the US Green Building Council and Run for the Schools- a local organization benefitting Iowa City schools. His work experience spans several genres and includes commercial, academic, master planning, and housing projects in California, Nevada, Iowa, Illinois, and abroad.  


Toi Sullivan, AIA, Director

Toi Sullivan, AIA is a Principal at FEH Associates Inc., a full-service architecture, structural engineering and interior design firm with four offices: Sioux City, Des Moines, Dubuque (Iowa) and Delafield (Wisconsin). She is a 1992 graduate from North Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Architecture and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design. She has been with FEH since 1999. As a Principal, Sullivan is involved in a variety of project types including: religious, education, libraries, municipal, museums, corporate/commercial and LEED certified. Sullivan is actively involved in the community and volunteers for several organizations including: Sioux City Historic Preservation Commission, Northwest Iowa Architects Council, Leadership Siouxland as past President, Sioux City Design Works Advisory Committee, and I-JOBS where she is a past member of the Board of Directors. 


Joseph Tursi, AIA, President-Elect

Joseph Tursi, AIA, is a Project Architect at OPN Architects, Inc., in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  OPN Architects is a holistic architectural, interior design and landscape architecture firm with offices in Cedar Rapids, Des Moines and Madison.  A 1991 graduate of Iowa State University, Tursi is involved with the AIA Iowa Public Relations Committee and Spring Meeting Planning Committee in addition to his role on the Executive Board.
