AIA Iowa Announces April as Architecture Month 

Events Held Statewide Celebrating Design, Communities, and Architectural Beauty 


Des Moines, Iowa (April 1, 2013) –The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter announced today the celebration of April as Iowa Architecture Month exemplifying the importance, beauty, and  significance of architecture. Numerous statewide initiatives have been planned to celebrate this annual event, including the signing of a State Proclamation by Governor Terry Branstad by April 19, a statewide newspaper insert in the eight largest newspapers the week of April 7, architectural workshops, tours, and lecture series. 


Throughout the month, AIA Iowa has planned events that promote the exploration of Iowa’s architectural treasures. National Architecture week, April 7-13, is just one part of AIA Iowa’s month long spotlight on the contributions architects make to our communities and our society in general. Events occurring statewide are:

The largest of all April’s events will be taking place this week at Iowa State University’s Scheman Building on April 4. The 2013 Spring Meeting: Re-Place brings architects, landscapers, planners, and other design professionals from across the state to Ames, IA for professional development and exhibitions. This year’s theme, Re-Place, focuses on the topic of restoration, renovation, rehabilitation, and renewal. Approximately 250 attendees will gather to hear from keynote speakers Donovan Rypkema, Place Economics, and Daniel Pitera, FAIA, Detroit Design Collaborative Center, about their experiences with renewing and replacing communities in dire need of rehabilitation. 


The Iowa Architectural Foundation (IAF), in conjunction with AIA Iowa Members, is also holding several events throughout April, including its fifth annual Architectural Month Lecture Series. The three lectures will discuss skyscrapers and are free to the public. Lectures will be held at 7 pm, on April 2, 9, and 16 at the Arthur Davis Conference Room of the Greater Des Moines Partnership. The second annual IAF Eat.Drink.Architecture Fundraiser will take place on Saturday, April 20 beginning at 12 noon. Visit for more information.
