Course Description:

The American Republic Building in Downtown Des Moines is an iconic example of Mid-Century Modern Architecture. Designed by Skidmore, Ownings, and Merrill's Gordon Bunshaft in 1965, the building has recently undergone an extensive building rehabilitation using the Secretary of Interior's Guidelines for the Treatment of Historic Buildings. This seminar offers Iowa architects the rare opportunity to learn about the design challenges that the architect faced related to the enclosure and mechanical systems. Attendees will also have the opportunity to see the building interior and hear a first-hand, design and construction team account of the challenges and opportunities provided by this project. BNIM, AWS, and Design Engineers will guide attendees through the project & elaborate on the integration of new technologies in the historic structure.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify how High-Performance Building Systems integrate in historic buildings

2. Discover how to replace old technologies with new ones keeping the original design and appearance intact

3. Understand the design challenges behind the mechanical systems of the American Republic Building

4. Review the history of the building, the tax credits which help make it possible, and the overall design goals of the project.

This program is registered with the American Institute of Architects. Architects will receive up to 4 continuing education credits (LU/HSW). AIA Iowa (023) is the AIA CEU provider.
