Seminar Description:
This interactive course will provide an overview of ISU's new flexible, dynamic learning space that encourages experimentation and cross-pollination of ideas across all disciplines. The day will focus around the collaborative efforts of a local and national architecture team, an expansive consultant team, an internationally-procured facade system, and a construction management team focused on integrated project delivery. Research at all phases of the project will be discussed, and the day will culminate in a tour of the building construction in progress.

Learning Objectives:

1. Attendees will learn how the project team worked with ISU user groups to develop and define project goals, take inventory and analyze existing collaboration facilities, equipment, and resources.
2. Attendees will learn how building information modeling (BIM) can be used to coordinate and integrate highly complex systems during design and construction as well as using the BIM technology to detect and design out health and safety risks from the outset.
3. Attendees will learn about how a green roof of prairie grass will cover much of the third floor promoting energy savings and sustainability as well as how the space was planned with design functional, flexible, resilient, and adaptable spaces for collaboration and innovation that will respond to changes in technology, population, and pedagogy with deliberate attention to environmental impact
4. Attendees will learn how a custom-engineered glazing and rain screen system was developed, mocked-up, installed, and tested, as well as how a green roof was integrated with the building envelope design.
