AIA Iowa People's Choice Award
We are preparing once again to celebrate Architecture Month in April and the Call for Entries for the People's Choice Award is now open! The AIA Iowa People’s Choice Award empowers the public to serve as the jury and helps bring awareness to the built environment and great design. It's easy to submit and it's a fun way to get the public involved. Here's what you need to know:
• There is a $25 entry fee for each submission. Entries can be purchased here on AIAIowa.org. Entry fees will be used to promote and plan architecture month activities!
• Each firm is invited to submit up to 4 projects, this will allow public users to see all projects more easily on the voting site.
• We still require the project to have been built in the last 5 years but all project types are eligible.
• Previously awarded (top 5 finishers) are not eligible to submit again but previously submitted projects can be resubmitted!
All AIA Iowa Firm members are invited to submit their project(s) to be considered for the People’s Choice Award. The deadline for firms to submit participating projects is March 24th.
The public will have the opportunity to vote once per day per project for their favorite project on IowaArchitecture.org in April to celebrate Architecture Month.
Visit IowaArchitecture.org to submit your projects today, the process is the same as all award submissions. As soon as you have purchased your entry you can begin submitting your project(s)! Questions? email Amy Spike at email@example.com.
2018 Legislative Session
Thank you for your interest in AIA Iowa’s advocacy efforts. You can stay in the know by checking your inbox each Monday for the new edition of the AIA Iowa Advocacy News.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our 12th annual AIA Iowa Design Professionals Day on the Hill on Tuesday, February 27, 2018. With over 40 attendees and displays by many firm members and related organizations, our issues were recognized by both the public and our state’s legislators. We were joined by Representative Ashley Hinson and Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg who each spoke in support of our members and organization.
Couldn’t make it? Read our 2018 Advocacy Platform.
It’s not too late to talk with your legislators. Matt Ostanik, AIA, 2018 Board Past President has put together a cheat sheet on how you can communicate with your legislators to make the biggest impact and build a relationship moving forward. Read it now.
Citizen Architect Program 2018 Advocacy Track
The public's view of architects and AIA Iowa is shaped primarily by how the individual AIA members interact with their clients and their communities. The Citizen Architect Program, launched in 2008 by the AIA Iowa Public Relations Committee, recognizes members who represent AIA's values to their communities through public service. This honor is bestowed upon all members who meet qualification criteria and is intended to encourage all AIA Iowa members to actively engage in their communities and share in the AIA mission.
The AIA Iowa Citizen Architect Program Advocacy Track recognizes AIA Iowa members who support their Iowa Legislators and advocate for the profession. Most members already qualify to participate, all you have to do once a year is make a monetary donation to a Legislator and have a one-on-one conversation with your Legislator.
Click here to complete your application- Due July 20, 2018
Thank you to all who applied for the Community Track! Participants will be announced at the beginning of April. Each member enrolled in the program for 2018 will be recognized at the AIA Iowa Annual Convention in September, on the AIA Iowa website, and with a press release sent to their local newspaper. Visit AIAIowa.org to view the 2017 participants of the Citizen Architect Program.
Architecture billings continue growth into 2018
Business conditions easing in the Northeast, but very strong in the rest of the country
2018 started on a strong note for architecture firms, as the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) saw its highest January score since 2007. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the January ABI score was 54.7, up from a score of 52.8 in the previous month. This score reflects an increase in design services provided by U.S. architecture firms (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 61.1, down from a reading of 62.0 the previous month, while the new design contracts index increased slightly from 53.4 to 53.9.
“Healthy conditions continue to remain strong in the Midwest and in Iowa,” said AIA Iowa Executive Director, Jessica Reinert. “With strong billings and healthy growth in new projects to start the year, firms remain generally optimistic about business conditions for the next several months.”
AIA National Convention 2018

Spring Conference 2018
Register now for the 2018 AIA Iowa Spring Conference! Mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 18th, 2018 and join us at the Scheman Building in Ames, IA.
This year's theme, Red Tape: Navigating Architecture, highlights this fundamental skill of architects. From strategically solving complex problems to deftly maneuvering through intricate processes and requirements, architects are navigators. You may not often think of yourself like this, but it is inherent in your daily practice. The intent of this year’s AIA Iowa Spring Conference is to open a dialogue and look broadly at the status of the profession within the context of this unique point in time. AIA Iowa is made up of a broad demographic of architects who span generations, backgrounds, and experiences who are currently grappling with the realities of our climate: be it environmental, political, global, economic or social. Come together to plot the course.

Iowa Architectural Foundation’s progressive food, drink and architecture tour - with something new!
The 2018 event will be held on Saturday, April 14th, beginning at the Iowa Taproom in Des Moines' East Village. The next stop is Truman’s, a brand new Kansas City style pizza tavern where you are sure to receive the Royal treatment and see much KC sports memorabilia! After Truman’s you’ll continue your architectural tour to the Royal Mile and then back to the Iowa Taproom.
Each stop will feature appetizers, beer samples, and conversation with the tour volunteers. Along the route, you will enjoy a guided walking tour of the architecture in downtown Des Moines. Tickets are $40 and must be purchased in advance!
Eat.Drink.Architecture is sponsored by the Iowa Architectural Foundation and Full Court Press.
