Iowa Celebrates Architecture Month in April

Events across the State Promote the Beauty and Importance of Architecture

Des Moines, Iowa (March 30, 2017) –The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter announced today the celebration of April as Iowa Architecture Month intended to exemplify the importance, beauty, and significance of architecture. Numerous statewide initiatives have been planned to celebrate this annual event, including the signing of a State Proclamation by Governor Terry Branstad that will occur today at 3:30 PM, architectural workshops, tours, films, lecture series and the AIA Iowa People’s Choice Award.

Returning this year is the AIA Iowa People’s Choice Award designed to promote architecture and to encourage appreciation and interaction with buildings within the state. AIA Iowa invites the public to serve as the jury and to judge architecture built by Iowa architects throughout the month of April. Anyone can vote once per project per day at IowaArchitecture.org. Winners will be announced at the end of the month.

In addition to the new People’s Choice Award, AIA Iowa has planned events that promote the exploration of Iowa’s architectural treasures. National Architecture week, April 9-15, is just one part of AIA Iowa’s month-long spotlight on the contributions architects make to our communities and society in general. Events occurring statewide are:

  • All Month Long: People's Choice Award Voting Open
  • March 30: Architecture Month Proclamation with the Governor

  • April 8: Iowa Architectural Foundation Lecture- Focus on Stone
  • April 9-15: National Architecture Week

  • April 12: AIA Iowa Spring Conference, Ames, IA
  • April 17-18: ISU - Computational Foundations Colloquium - Ames, IA
  • April 18: Sketchy Tuesday- Submit your best sketches to AIA Iowa’s Facebook & Twitter
  • April 19: ISU - Peg Rawes, UCL London Lecture - Ames, IA
  • April 20: University of Iowa Neri Oxman lecture - Iowa City, IA with SEIAS social afterward

  • April 26: NWIAS I Look Up Film Night and Architectural Firm Showcase - Sioux City Public Museum
  • April 28: People’s Choice Award Winners Announced

The largest of all of April’s events will be taking place at Iowa State University’s Scheman Building on April 12. The AIA Iowa 2017 Spring Conference: Resilience brings architects and design professionals from across the state to Ames, IA for keynotes, workshops, and networking between students and professionals. This year’s theme, Resilience, focuses on creating building design and crafting firm practices that are sustainable, resilient and diverse; easily adapt to change in culture, demographics and expectations. Highlighting the importance of pursuing resilient designs and practices that are adaptable to ever changing markets that designers and entrepreneurs can better shape a future for. Approximately 200 attendees will gather to hear from keynote speakers Richard Graves, AIA, of Center for Sustainable Building Research and Katherine Darnstadt, AIA of Latent Design.
