AIA Iowa Architects Receive Awards



Medal of Honor, Educator and Young Architect Awards were presented



Des Moines, Iowa (September 22, 2016) – The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter (AIA Iowa) awarded three leaders for their exceptional contributions to the profession of architecture in Iowa at the AIA Iowa Annual Awards Celebration held Thursday, September 22, at the American Enterprise Group headquarters in Des Moines. Mike Broshar, FAIA, with INVISION in Waterloo was awarded the 2016 AIA Iowa Medal of Honor. Bruce Bassler, retired Professor of Architecture in the College of Design at Iowa State University, was honored with the 2016 AIA Iowa Educator Award and
Danielle Hermann, AIA, with OPN Architects in Des Moines, received the 2016 Young Architect Award.

The awards were announced in conjunction with the AIA Iowa’s 2016 Fall Convention, “Current,” held at the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center in Des Moines, September 22 and 23.

2016 AIA Iowa Medal of Honor Award

Michael Broshar, FAIA, INVISION in Waterloo

Michael Broshar’s accomplishments have affected the architectural profession significantly in his involvement with AIA Iowa and a variety of other organizations and events. His dedication to the industry is exemplified in his tenure of various positions within AIA Iowa and AIA National since the late ‘80s. Some of his greatest accomplishments occurred while serving as AIA Iowa President, AIA Central States Regional Director and National Vice President of the AIA.

Kate Schwennsen, FAIA, Director and Professor of Architecture at Clemson University commented, ‘Through this service, and his long-time leadership of one of the region’s most productive firms, Michael Broshar, FAIA, has had a considerable effect on the profession of architecture in Iowa and far beyond. As a talented designer, firm principal and engaged leader, (who also happens to be a fine artist), he has increased the quality and value of architecture and architects. He is most deserving of being recognized with the AIA Iowa Medal of Honor.’


2016 AIA Iowa Educator Award

Bruce Bassler, retired Professor, Department of Architecture, College of Design, Iowa State University

As a professor with the College of Design, Bruce Bassler engaged more than 400 students from architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, construction engineering and materials science in 22 projects over 18 years. Bruce has contributed much to the architectural profession in Iowa and has helped provide the groundwork for hundreds of Iowa architect’s early careers. His educational contributions extended much beyond the limits of the classroom.

Cal Lewis, FAIA, Professor of Architecture at Iowa State University commented, ‘There are many poignant lessons to be learned in preparation for our complex profession; thankfully, Professor Bruce Bassler devoted himself to insuring that our students understood both the joy and challenges of actually making and experiencing their creations as they became real.’

Danielle Hermann, AIA, OPN Architects in Des Moines

As a role model and mentor, architect Danielle Hermann, AIA is committed to elevating design and practice through leadership in all contexts, service to the architectural profession and community, and a sustained commitment to advancing future generations of diverse practitioners.

Jessica Reinert, Hon. AIA Iowa, Executive Director of AIA Iowa commented, ‘Danielle has shown exceptional leadership throughout her professional and volunteer careers. She is outstanding at establishing a clear vision and goals that lead to successful outcomes and has helped move the profession and the AIA Iowa Chapter forward.”
