Iowa Architect Receives National Award


Des Moines, IA (January 22, 2016) The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter (AIA Iowa) is pleased to announce that local architect, Edd Soenke, AIA, has recently received a national award from the National Institute of Building Sciences’ (NIBS). Tim Ryan, Chairman, of the NIBS Board presents NIBS’ highest award, the Honor Award, to Soenke on January 14th for his 7 years of work on the Design Guidelines for the Visual Environment as the chairperson of the Low Vision Design Committee.


The Design Guidelines document is
the first of its kind in the United States to offer assistance to design professionals and others in accommodating a growing segment of the population who live with the spectrum of vision disorders contributing to Low Vision. Soenke has presented the guidelines to groups in Baltimore, Maryland; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Austin, Texas; Des Moines, Iowa; and Washington, DC.

The Low Vision Design Committee focuses on development of design principles and regulatory guidelines for creating safer and more accommodating environments for the growing population of people with low vision.
