Des Moines, IA– October 23, 2015 – The AIA Iowa | Central States Region Convention held in Des Moines October 15-16 honored the work of AIA Emerging Professionals: students, intern architects and those licensed within the last 10 years. The AIA Iowa Emerging Professionals Committee coordinated an exhibition of architectural work, art, and designs of emerging architectural professionals. This exhibition aimed to promote the compelling efforts of the rising generation of architects and designers and inspire professionals to continue to mentor and engage the many talented and motivated emerging professionals across the region.
Over 40 submissions were entered and displayed as an opportunity for emerging professionals to receive extensive exposure of their work. Selected works were viewed by over 1,000 convention attendees and exhibitors. Three winners were selected in a “People’s Choice” competition and received prize money. The competition was sponsored by Holmes Murphy and Associates and the AIA Iowa Emerging Professionals Committee.
The winners included:
$300 Grand Prize: Brent Hoffman, Assoc. AIA
Project Title: Untitled #6, Black Ink Print.
Brent said of his project: The contents firmly held within the confines of the box, the original intent of the packing material was to preserve. The recipient opens the box and quickly discards the brown paper packaging material. What once had purpose now lays without purpose. The crumpled form, the deep creases, and the torn edges, all begin to tell a story. Each form unique to the contents that it contained Untitled #6 is one in a series of six that begins to explore the beauty of the discarded.
$100 Runner-Up: Hoang Tran, Assoc. AIA
Project Title: Proposal for Renovation: Rockwell Collins
Hoang said of his project: Rockwell Collins is a leading aerospace engineer corporation who specializes in communication. In the past, Rockwell Collins made breakthroughs with aviation radio technologies and continues to be a leading figure in the industry. When Rockwell Collins approached the firm for a proposal to change the image of the warehouses, we responded to the request with a series of branding exercises.
$100 Runner-Up: Monica Bailey, Assoc. AIA
Project Title: Chicago Architecture Biennial Lakefront Kiosk Competition
Monica said of her project: Our team’s objective is to express the simplicity of rhythmic regularity of Chicago’s cityscape while also addressing the dynamic complexity of its ever changing interior functions. It is our intent to allow this structure to transform freely.
