American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter Visits Capitol
to discuss 2015 Positions

Des Moines, IA (February 9, 2015) –The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter (AIA Iowa) will visit the Iowa State Capitol today for Design Professionals Day on the Hill Monday, February 9th.  Attendees will meet with state legislators to discuss issues pertinent to the architecture profession including three major principles to enhance Iowa’s vitality and viability. Issues of interest for the 2015 legislative session include: Project Delivery for Public Improvements, Statue of Repose, and School Safety.

“Our goal is to connect with state legislators to serve as a source of expertise for items related to the built environment. The role of the architecture profession in the community is an important one,” said Executive Director of AIA Iowa, Jessica Reinert, Honorary AIA Iowa, CAE, IOM, “Iowa architects enhance the quality of life for both current and future generations. Livable communities, sustainability and quality design is vitally important to enhancing Iowa’s vitality and viability. Our legislative positions help to ensure Iowa’s prosperity.”

One of The Chapter’s goals in 2015 is to reduce the number of years in the Statue of Repose. Currently Iowa has the longest Statue of Repose for Architects in the United States, 15 years. Iowa’s Statue of Repose holds architects to an unfair standard, given that it is only the owners of a building who can control how buildings are taken care of and treated over time including maintenance, uses not contemplated, and change in use. Such treatment, or lack thereof, can have a huge effect on creating a problem for which the architect has no control.
