Iowa Celebrates Architecture Month in April


Des Moines, Iowa (April 2, 2014) – The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter announced today the celebration of April as Iowa Architecture Month exemplifying the importance, beauty, and significance of architecture. Numerous statewide initiatives have been planned to celebrate this annual event, including the signing of a State Proclamation by Governor Terry Branstad on April 17, a statewide newspaper insert in the eight largest newspapers the week of April 6, architectural workshops, tours, and lecture series.

Throughout the month, AIA Iowa has planned events that promote the exploration of Iowa’s architectural treasures. National Architecture week, April 6-12, is just one part of AIA Iowa’s month long spotlight on the contributions architects make to our communities and our society in general. Events occurring statewide are:

• AIA Iowa Newspaper Insert, April 6
• Dubuque Main Street Architecture Days, April 7-12
• IAF Architecture Month Lecture Series, April 8
• ISU Department of Architecture Lecture Series, April 9
• CRICAC PechaKucha 20x20 Night, April 9
• PechaKucha Des Moines, April 10
• IAF Eat.Drink.Architecture Event, April 12
• IAF Architecture Month Lecture Series, April 15
• AIA Iowa Spring Conference, April 16
• ISU Department of Architecture Lecture Series, April 16
• Architecture Month Proclamation Signing by the Governor, April 17
• IAF Architecture by Children Drawing Contest, April 18 deadline
• IAF Architecture Month Lecture Series, April 22
• Corridor Canstruction, April 26
• IAF Architecture Month Lecture Series, April 29

The largest of all April’s events will be taking place at Iowa State University’s Scheman Building on April 16. The 2014 Spring Conference: A(E)ffect brings architects and design professionals from across the state to Ames, IA for keynotes, workshops, and connecting students and professionals. This year’s theme A(E)ffect, focuses on design and inspiring the creativity in architects. Approximately 200 attendees will gather to hear from keynote speakers Steve Dumez, FAIA, of Eskew+Dumez+Ripple, and Stephen Van Dyck, AIA of LMN Architects, about their experiences with design and projects in the state of Iowa.
