Canstruction 2014: Canventions that Changed the World

Des Moines, Iowa- March 19, 2014- The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter announces Central Iowa Canstruction® 2014: Canventions that Changed the World. Canstruction is a charity event committed to making a significant contribution in the fight against HUNGER across Iowa.  The 18th annual competition will be held at the Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines on March 29th. This competition puts a visual spotlight on hunger while showcasing the design community’s best and most creative. The event is planned and presented by the American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter.

The competition is loaded with design constraints as local architects, design professionals, engineers and students from area schools are challenged to design and build sculptures using canned food as their primary building material. Tape and cardboard serve as nails and cement. The colors available on product labels become the artists’ pallet. “Bricks” come in a variety of sizes from the smallest tuna can to the industrial-size tomato can. Competition rules dictate that structures can be only 10’lx10’hx8’h and must be self supporting.

Teams will build “Canstructions” from 7-11 a.m., Saturday, March 29th. The public is invited to view the structures. Awards ceremonies will follow that day at 12 noon. Multiple awards will be given for Best Meal, Best Use of Labels, Structural Ingenuity, Jurors’ Favorite, Honorable Mentions, and Young Designers. Jury members include local celebrities from Central Iowa.

The public is encouraged to visit the displays and bring canned food for donation to the Food Bank of Iowa. This deliciously inventive charity competition will remain on public display at the Science Center of Iowa through April 5th. All food and proceeds will be donated to the Food Bank of Iowa, serving 280 agencies in 42 Iowa counties.
