Join us in Iowa City to learn about two brand new spaces on campus at the University of Iowa. We will be learning from Jonathan Sloan, AIA Project Manager with BNIM Architects on the ins and outs of the Visual Arts Building and Josh Rechkemmmer, AIA, Architect with Neumann Monson for School of Music. 


Seminar Description:

This seminar explores the conception and realization of an educationally oriented musical performance facility where spaces were created to be multi-functional and support collaboration and creativity while achieving required acoustical separation between spaces. The presentation will focus on the role of acoustics in the project’s design and performance and will cover the life of the project from design through construction. The seminar and tour will be led by the architectural and construction project managers and will be tailored to those in the design profession. Then the group will visit the School of Visual Arts where they will review the design and detailing features and challenges of some unique technologies and innovative design elements and the construction methods used and lessons learned from this unique projects in Iowa City brand new spaces on campus at the University of Iowa. Learning Objectives

1. Understanding building and systems tectonics utilized in the Visual Arts Building : Review the design and detailing features and challenges of some unique technologies and innovative design elements.

2. Understanding building and systems tectonics utilized in the Visual Arts Building : Review the construction methods used and lessons learned from this unique project.

3. Review the process employed in the project and experiences gained from design through construction in achieving required acoustical separation in a highly technical, programmatically rich building.

4. Explore the scope of acoustical detailing, acoustical assemblies and coordination required across disciplines including review of documents, construction photos and a tour of the facility.

Architectural Experience Program and AIA Continuing Education

Interns may earn AXP Supplemental Experience hours by completing approved AIA Continuing Education programs – one AIA CEU/LU is equal to one AXP experience hour. When submitting to NCARB, Learning Units (LUs) must be documented on the intern’s AIA transcript. Any intern in AXP can request a free AIA Transcript by visiting the AIA website
