Making Historic Properties Accessible

Join us for a professional development event right before the South East Iowa Golf Outing on August 25th from 10-11a.m! Earn 1 HSW credit before you head out for a day of fun!

Most Historic buildings and landscapes were not designed to be readily accessible for people with disabilities.  With the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, access to properties open to the public has been a civil right for over 25 years. This course will explore the complex issue of providing accessibility at historic properties, while underscoring the need to balance accessibility and historic preservation. The course will assist design professionals in evaluating  historic properties so that the greatest degree of accessibility can be provided while minimizing changes to historic materials and features.

Learning Objectives

1. Review the historical significance of the property and identify character-defining features

2. Assess the property's existing and required level of accessibility

3. Evaluate accessibility options within a preservation context

4. Applying the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation to accessible design soltions
