Procrastinators Ball: An Overview of Hancher Auditorium

The seminar will be a case study overview of Hancher Auditorium a Pelli Clark Pelli Architects and OPN Architects project on the University of Iowa campus. Speakers will examine two distinct aspects of the building:  the structure of the building and the exterior enclosure which incorporate long cantilevered spans and an intricate metal skin system.  The interior performance spaces focusing on details of theatrical, acoustical, and audio visual technologies. OPN Architects and the University of Iowa will discuss these topics and end with facility tour to discuss these technologies in further detail.

Learning Objectives

1.Discuss the importance of health, safety and welfare of a multi purpose public venue that is an intricate part to a college university.

2.Examine the material applications and system details that are needed for a successful rehearsal space that has the flexibility to function as a smaller performance venue both inside and outside and is also adjacent to a bus stop and public city street.

3.Understand the role of the structural design in achieving the dynamic exterior form of the design and isolating the performance spaces from vibrations and noise that could be transferred through the building structure.

4.Identify the challenges to designing and detailing the undulating metal skin system for the building while meeting the energy goals of the building enclosure.
