The purpose of this course is to familiarize design professionals with many of the important changes to the state building code and the state fire code by identifying the specific code changes that have occurred and, more importantly, to help design professionals understand the reason behind the changes.
1. Increase understanding of the state fire code concepts and requirements for fire and life safety and their application to projects required to comply with the state fire code.
2. Identify significant changes to the state fire code, included but not limited to means of egress, fire protection, special features, and building services.
3. Examine the concepts and requirements for state codes and standards of Iowa.
4. Understand how 2014 Iowa Codes and Standards will impact future design.

Ljerka Vasiljevic is the Construction Design Engineer Senior with the State Fire Marshal’s Building Code Bureau. She directs the work of the staff in the Building Code Bureau and she assists in procedures for upgrading the State Building Code and the State Fire Code. Also, she reviews final drawings and specifications of various buildings to insure compliance with the State Building Code and NFPA codes and standards and she conducts meetings with architects, engineers, building officials, facility administrators and other state agencies. Ljerka is a registered architect in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
