Course Descriptions

Session 1: The Application of the State Building Code and the State Fire Code 3 CES LUs/HSW
Presenter: Ljerka Vasiljevic

This session will identify major building and fire code issues and it will also describe the plan review and the building and fire code inspection process. Case studies for both the building code and fire code will bring scenarios to life and showcase how problems can be solved.

Learning Objectives:
  • Master the application of the state building code
  • Perform the application of the state building code
  • Discuss and clarify the plan review and inspection process
  • Identify issues and learn from case studies on how to solve unique problems in plans
Ljerka Vasiljevic is the Construction Design Engineer Senior with the State Fire Marshal's Building Code Bureau. She directs work of the staff in the Building Code Bureau and she assists in procedures in upgrading the state building and the state fire code. She reviews plans for compliance with many state and federal codes and standards and she conducts meetings with architects, engineers, building officials, and other state agencies. Ljerka is registered architect in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Session 2: Energy Code Changes Impacting the Building Envelope 3 CES LUs/HSW
Presenter: David Ruffcorn, AIA

The State of Iowa has adopted the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code, we will look at the changes from the 2009 IECC to the 2012 as well as how the code impacts the building envelope.

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify the climate zone for the project location and choose the path of compliance that is appropriate with their design.
  • Compare the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code  to the 2009 as well as ASHRAE 90.1 2010 provisions and how they impact the building envelope.
  • Breakdown and discuss the current view of building science/technology to build a more efficient building.
  • Misconceptions, pitfalls and missed information critical to a complete COMcheck will be investigated. Explore experiences with COMcheck reviews over the past four years.
Dave Ruffcorn is with the State Fire Marshal’s Office – Building Code Bureau.
Dave holds a Professional Bachelor of Architecture degree from Iowa State University, is a Registered Architect, and has been a member of the AIA for over 20 years.  Dave has over 24 years of Architectural experience and has worked for a number of Central Iowa Architectural firms as well as running his own firm. Dave is the Iowa’s first Energy Code plans examiner and building energy inspector.  Dave is responsible for reviewing all state owned and state funded buildings for adherence to the International Energy Conservation Code, Life Cycle Cost Analysis and LEED/Green Codes.


Continuing Education

By attending the Procrastinator's Ball on June 23rd, AIA members will earn 6 AIA CES LUs/HSW, or 3 AIA CES LUs/HSW per session attended. AIA Iowa is an AIA CES Approved Provider (#A023) with The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System.
