Nick Serfass, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, PMP from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) will present on a range of licensure topics relevant to students, interns, supervisors, architects, and people in the architecture profession. The presentation will review the steps necessary to achieve licensure to become an architect and other programs to get the most out of your career in architecture.

Topics will include:

  • Background of NCARB
  • The entities involved in the licensure process
  • How to establish an NCARB Record
  • How to progress successfully through the Intern Development Program (IDP)
  • What to expect with the Architect Registration Examination® (ARE®)
  • Recent changes to NCARB programs
  • Value of the NCARB Certificate

He will remain on-site after the presentation to help address specific questions on an individual basis.


NICK SERFASS, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, PMP

Assistant Director, Internship + Education, NCARB

Nick Serfass is the Assistant Director, Internship + Education at NCARB. In this position he helps support and guide the education and internship continuum as it evolves with the architecture profession. In pursuit of this effort, he has delivered over 200 presentations on licensure to colleges and universities of architecture, professional conferences, and architecture firms. His work also focuses on staffing committees related to licensure and internship, as well as program development for several Council-wide initiatives.

Serfass previously held the position of project architect for a large firm in Richmond, Virginia. During his time with the firm, Serfass helped lead an in-house IDP group, which was awarded the AIA/NCARB IDP Outstanding Firm of the Year distinction in 2007. His efforts focused on demystifying the IDP process and preparing new candidates for the ARE.

Serfass holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia, a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Miami, and an MBA from Auburn University. He is licensed to practice architecture in the commonwealth of Virginia and the state of Florida. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, achieved the qualification of LEED Accredited Professional, earned the Project Management Institute’s Project Management Professional credential, and holds the NCARB Certificate for national reciprocity.

Serfass has also served as a member of the Program Advisory Group for the 2008 and 2009 Architecture Exchange.

By attending "NCARB & You: IDP, ARE, & Certification" on March 5, 2014 at the AIA Iowa Office, AIA and Associate AIA members will earn 1.5 AIA CES LUs. NCARB (#J135) is an AIA CES Approved Provider with The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System. Credit earned on completion of this program will be reported to AIA CES for AIA members by NCARB. Certificates of Completion are available upon request. Questions?
