Kicking Habits, an exploration of SustAIAnability 2030

“Rapidly accelerating climate change (global warming), which is caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, is now fueling dangerous regional and global environmental events. Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration illustrates that buildings are responsible for almost half (48%) of all GHG emissions annually. Seventy-six percent of all electricity generated by US power plants goes to supply the Building Sector. Therefore, immediate action in the Building Sector is essential if we are to avoid hazardous climate change.” Source: Architecture2030.org.

In 2005, in response to the above information, the American Institute of Architects established a position statement stating the need for architects to take action against greenhouse gasses. It called for a 50% reduction in the generation of greenhouse gasses by our buildings by the year 2010, with a 10% or greater reduction in each of the following five years, leading to carbon neutral buildings by the year 2030. We are less than two years away from 2010, and need the tools today to enact change needed to meet our position in 2010, and to continue moving towards our 2030 goal.

The 2008 Convention Committee established the theme of “Kicking Habits” to focus our awareness on the design opportunities inherent in meeting the 2030 challenge. We hope you will join us to be challenged, inspired, and to learn. We look forward to seeing you in Des Moines on September 25 and 26 for “Kicking Habits”!
