Emerging Professionals

Mission Statement

Provide input and discussion about activities and issues relevant to the younger members of our profession and to facilitate in the planning of initiatives that seek to provide educational, creative, or service opportunities for emerging professionals in Iowa.

In 2006, the AIA Iowa Board of Directors set up an Emerging Architects Task Force to determine the needs of young architects and recommend how AIA Iowa could best support those needs as an associate member. The task force turned into a committee that is now the Emerging Professionals Committee which is replacing the existing Young Architects Committee. The change in designation was inspired by (1) our Emerging Architect Task Force and (2) the well known national “Emerging Professionals” title.  We believe by changing the name of the committee, it will help to identify the group on a local, regional, and national level.  We want to stay consistent with the name of the committee with regional and national organizations which are similar.

The committee itself consists of any Associate AIA member that is interested in participating.  The Emerging Professionals will still be considered to be those non-licensed members or members licensed 10 years or less. The committee will host the events and activities throughout the year for young professionals. If you are interested in joining the committee, contact Jesse Bulman.

Internship Guidelines for Best Practices

A survey was sent out in 2007 to firm members to determine what they were providing for interns statewide and how to better focus the efforts of the Emerging Professionals Committee. View the survey.

One of the results from our survey indicated there is a need for more comprehensive education on IDP training and mentoring within individual firms.  View the complete results from the survey. As a result, the EP Committee sent out Internship Guidelines for Firms. This is a way for firms to understand more about IDP and what interns need to succeed in the program.  Our goal is for the guidelines to create awareness of your internship throughout your firm and arm interns and firm leaders with the information needed to provide a nurturing experience for all interns throughout the state. View the Guidelines.

Please take time to review them, and we encourage you to discuss these with your firm leaders and mentors. Feel free to post these in a visible location within your firm, so everyone can view them. Also, forward this to any students you know that will be graduating soon, so they can know what to expect with their internship experience.  As we state in our guidelines one of our objectives is to “Empower students and interns to make informed decisions about the firms they select for their internships”.

Central States Region Emerging Professionals Survey and Results

In 2006, the AIA Central States Region voted to use surplus budget funding to support the needs of the Emerging Professionals in the Midwest region and recommend how the regional AIA component could best support those needs. From the discussion, a budget and timeline were to be determined.  The logical first step for the task force was to discuss options for support and survey the members.  A survey was sent out in April 2007 to over 900 Associate AIA members in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.  The following is an assessment of the results in order to better determine a focus for the Emerging Professional Task Force. View the Results.
