Iowa Disaster Recovery Workshop

On December 11, 2008, AIA members participated in the Iowa Disaster Recovery Workshop in Coralville, Iowa.  This all-day workshop followed the two-day Iowa Disaster Recovery Conference sponsored by the Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED). The workshop was sponsored in part by the AIA and organized by an interdisciplinary group of professionals including members of the AIA and ICOTE.  The intent of the workshop was to pair communities affected by this summer’s floods and tornados with an interdisciplinary group of professionals.  The primary goal was to start these communities thinking more sustainably in their planning and rebuilding efforts, building on the conversations from the Conference.

Three communities: Chariton, Ottumwa, and Waverly, attended the conference. Nearly 50 people served as resources for these communities the day of the workshop. Jonathan Ramsey, AIA, a member of the Workshop Planning Committee, remarked that this was an ideal venue to introduce sustainable design principles that can serve as a framework for planning and rebuilding efforts.  By educating these communities on sustainable design, we have the opportunity to plan and rebuild smarter, and make a Iowa a better place to live.

A HUGE thank you to those AIA Iowa members who participated in this project. Those serving on the Workshop Planning Committee include: Mike Morman, AIA; Kevin Nordmeyer, AIA Jonathan Ramsey, AIA; and, Edd Soenke, AIA. Those who served as resources for the communities during the workshop include: Michael Gumm, AIA; Bruce Hamous, AIA; Katie Harms, Tom Hurd, AIA; Carey Nagle, AIA; Chad Walters and Eric Wessels, AIA.

AIA150 West Des Moines Pattern Book

On Monday, June 2, the Central Iowa Architects presented A Pattern Book for West Des Moines Neighborhoods to the West Des Moines City Council. The Pattern Book is a product of the City’s Affordable Housing Initiative, a program encouraging homeowners to retain the character of their homes within the older, affordable neighborhoods of the City.  This initiative is part of the nationwide community service program of the AIA titled “Blueprint for America: A Gift to the Nation," the primary program of AIA150. For more information regarding the Pattern Book, contact Linda Schemmel at 515.222.3620.

A Pattern Book for West Des Moines Neighborhoods is now available for free download at www.wdm-ia.com. This 45-page book targets West Des Moines homes built between 1900 and the 1970s, but the information applies to an array of homes and styles that are common throughout the Midwest.

2030 Op Ed Piece Distributed by AIA Iowa

Essman and Associates, our public relations consultant, has worked with Mike Broshar, FAIA, following our convention, to develop an Op Ed piece for distribution to the print media in Iowa.

The piece addresses the many misperceptions about the causes of climate change and what needs to be done to address the issues based on an American Institute of Architects recent survey revealing these misperceptions.  We have already received favorable response from the Central Iowa Business magazine which plans to print it.  Read the piece here, Cleaning the Air.

LEGO Model of 801 Grand on the Move

During the month of October the AIA Iowa LEGO model of 801 Grand will be displayed at the Principal Pavilion S-2 as part of their 'art@work' program. The structure was design by Francie Berger, Senior Model Design, LEGO System, Inc., and built at the 1990 Iowa State Fair as part of AIA Iowa's exhibit in the atrium of the Cultural Center. Kids of all ages helped Francie construct the model over three days at the Fair. The bricks were donated by LEGO Systems, Inc. There were 44,000 LEGO blocks used in the construction.

What role will you play in "green" design?

Nationwide, consumers are uneasy about energy issues and what they mean for the economy and the environment. Perhaps your own concern about rising gas prices, pollution or climate change has you thinking about buying a more fuel efficient car or checking into a bus route. But have you considered the energy used by buildings where you work, shop and live? Read the complete article written by Kevin Monson, AIA, LEED AP.
