2009 Medal of Honor Winner
Calvin Lewis, FAIA
Calvin Lewis, FAIA, Professor and Chair, Department of Architecture for the College of Design at Iowa State University, was the proud recipient of the 2009 AIA Iowa Medal of Honor. Lewis received the award at the 2009 CSR/ AIA Iowa Convention Awards Celebration on October 16th. This award recognizes an AIA Iowa member for distinguished service to the profession of architecture.
2009 Education Award

Kate Schwennsen, FAIA
Kate Schwennsen, FAIA, Professor and Associate Dean for the College of Design at Iowa State University, was the proud recipient of the 2009 AIA Iowa Education Award. Schwennsen received the award at the 2009 CSR/ AIA Iowa Convention Awards Celebration on October 16th. This annual award recognizes an Iowa educator within or outside of the profession for his/her contributions to architectural education in Iowa.
Emerging Prfoessionals Sketch Competition Winner
The Emerging Professionals Committee (EPC) showcased a new competition this year with a napkin sketch competition themed "The Future Architect". More than 40 unique interpretations were entered over the course of the Convention. Eryn Dietzenbach with RDG Planning and Design was the winner of the competition. She won a prize worth over $600 of ARE 4.0 study materials. View the winning entries on the AIA Iowa EPC Facebook site. A special thanks to Piggott, Inc. and Koch Brothers for their support of the EPC by providing the furnishings for the EP lounge.
Iowa State University Scholarship Recipients 2009
The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter and American Institute of Architects scholarships will be awarded to several Iowa State University students at the Iowa State University College of Design Kocimski Auditorium, Friday, September 11th.
The AIA Iowa / AIA National Diversity Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000 each, will be awarded to Joshua Abbey and Melissa Mathis. Both students hold high GPAs and show great promise as future architects.
The AIA Iowa Scholarship, in the amount of $800, will be awarded to Ryan Frank. Frank served as AIAS President for 2009 and attended the AIAS Grassroots Convention represnting the ISU Chapter this past year. He also served on the College of Design Career Days Planning Committee and has been on the Dean's list throughout his ISU career. He will be a fifth year student this fall.
The AIA National / AIA Iowa Merit Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, will be awarded to Anna Snider. Snider is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and has been on the Dean's list throughout her ISU career. She will be a fourth year student this fall.

2008 Education Award Winner
David A. Block, AIA-E
Professor David A. Block, AIA, has been a Professor at the College of Design at Iowa State University (ISU) since 1982, he was an Assistant Professor of Architecture at ISU from 1973-1979 and an Associate Professor of Architecture at ISU from 1979-1982. Block commented, “I practice what I teach and teach what I practice.” From the first year of teaching through his current 35th year he has taught the principles of “green architecture”. Gregory S. Palermo, FAIA, Professor and Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies at ISU commented, “Dave has a student friendly teaching approach, and he is genuinely concerned about the welfare of his students; he wants them to succeed professionally and in life. His commitment to ‘”green” architecture predates that particular terminology by 30 years.”

2008 Medal of Honor Winner
Mark C. Engelbrecht, FAIA
Professor and Dean Mark C. Engelbrecht, FAIA, has been the Dean of the College of Design at Iowa State University for the last fourteen years and has had a forty-five-year career as a practitioner and educator in the profession of architecture. Engelbrecht advocates for design that is engaged with communities and placed-based, and his commitment to Iowa is without parallel. During his tenure as dean, through a wide-variety of programs, students and faculty of Iowa State University have served communities in over 80% of Iowa’s 99 counties through applied research, outreach and extension activities. Calvin F. Lewis, FAIA, Professor and Chair of the Department of Architecture at Iowa State University commented that, “Dean Mark Engelbrecht has provided the most distinguished and learned leadership to the lifeblood of our profession, our educational endeavor.”

Challenge, Inspire, Learn: Emerging Professionals Exhibit Winners
The Emerging Professionals Committee sought works from the emerging Iowa professionals across the state for their 2008 compeition "Challenge, Inspire, Learn." Emerging professionals submitted work that explored various aspects of design, within and beyond the traiditional career of any yuong professional or aspiring individual in the architectural community. The works were displayed at the 2008 Convention. The winners, with a $100 prize each, are:

Iowa State University Scholarship Recipients 2008
The American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter and American Institute of Architects scholarships were awarded to four Iowa State University students at the Iowa State University College of Design Kocimski Auditorium, on Friday, September 5th.
The two $1,500 American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter / American Institute of Architects scholarships were presented to Tyia Hahn and Sam Mulholland. Both students were admitted into the professional program this fall and are native Iowans.
The $2,000 American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter / American Institute of Architects scholarship was awarded to Melissa Mathis. She is a third year student in the top 2% of her class and has been involved with Habitat for Humanity, Mississippi River Cleanup, ISU Resident Hall Recycling Startup Committee, and the ISU Solar Decathlon project.
Finally, the recipient of the $1,000 2008-2009 the American Institute of Architects, Iowa Chapter scholarship was Amanda Moore. She is the AIAS Vice-President and a fifth year student who has been on the Dean’s list every semester of her college career. Amanda was also chosen to be an Honors Leader at ISU for freshman this year.

2007 Education Award Winner
Gregory Palermo, FAIA
Professor Gregory Palermo’s, FAIA, leadership experience and contributions in teaching and scholarship, architectural practice, professional service, and community engagement have shaped a broadly informed perspective of the profession of architecture, collaborating disciplines, and architectural education. He is a Professor of Architecture and Associate Chair for the Undergraduate Program at Iowa Sate University (ISU). Gregory teaches architectural design, urban design, and introductory theory. He has also served as an adjunct faculty member between 1976 and 1990 at Washington University. Gregory’s 20+ years of architectural practice includes leadership roles as principal, manager and/or designer for all phases of the architectural process from master planning through construction. Active as a design awards juror, lecturer, and convention and conference chair, a past director and national vice-president of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and a past director and president of the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) for which he has chaired 15 US and 2 international accreditation visits. He has received multiple grants, recognitions and awards including the ISU Miller Fellowship, the AIA Fellowship, and the ISU College of Design Faculty Award for Extraordinary Performance.
2007 Honorary Membership Award Winner
Mark E. Blunck
Since 1987 Mark E. Blunck has written over 100 published articles on architecture and design with approximately 90 of them appearing in the Iowa Architect. These articles have covered diverse projects in the commercial, corporate, educational and residential field for many Iowa architectural firms. His writing style is a lucid combination of a detailed description of the design process and finished project combined with a flowing narrative story telling style that enables the reader to experience the work as if they were present in the space. In 1995, the 1992 Iowa Architect Design Awards issue, consisting of nine of 13 articles with Mark’s byline was awarded top honors, noted for its “lively editorial comment” and clean, crisp and consistent graphic design. Mark’s articles have appeared in many magazines in addition to the Iowa Architect, such magazines include Builder / Architect, Echoes Magazine, and American Society of Magazine Photographers.
Innovate, design, share: YAC Exhibition Winners
The Young Architects Committee sought works from young Iowa architects across the state for their 2007 Competition "innovate, design, share". Young architects submitted work that explored various aspects of design, within and beyond the traditional career of any young architect or aspiring individual in the architectural community. The works were displayed at the 2007 Convention. The winners are:

AIA/AIA Iowa Scholarship Recipients 2007
On Friday, September 7th, the first two AIA/AIA Iowa Scholarships were presented to ISU students Josh Abbey and Max Mahaffey. Each student will recieve $1500 toward their architecture education. Recipients were chosen based on the following criteria:
- Student of good academic standing
- Student accepted to or enrolled in the Architecture program
- US citizen
- Preference to an applicant belonging to an under-represented US ethnic group
- Preference to applicant from the State of Iowa
In addition, the AIA Iowa scholarship will be presented to Bill Stockdale in the amount of $1000 toward his architecture education. Criteria for this scholarship include:
- Demonstrated involvement in AIAS
- 1st, 2nd or 3rd year student
- Demonstrated potential in design
