Tim Schroeder, AIA, LEED AP, has received one of the AIA's 2008 Young Architects Awards. This special honor is bestowed upon professionals licensed 10 years or fewer (regardless of their age), who have shown exceptional leadership and make significant contributions to the profession early in their careers.
Schroeder is the second Iowa architect to receive this award. Schroeder graduated cum laude from Iowa State University in 1994, receiving the Kocimski Award, the highest award available to graduating architecture students. In 2000 at age 30, Schroeder became a vice president of Neumann Monson Architects in Iowa City and has led many of the firm's design and sustainable architecture endeavors. An outstanding designer, his work has been honored by the AIA Iowa chapter and other organizations at the local, state and regional level. With his leadership, Neumann Monson Architects has created a number of Iowa’s sustainable firsts, including:
- First green roof project, North Ridge Park Pavilion in Coralville.
- First LEED-certified school, James Van Allen Elementary in North Liberty
- First LEED-certified public building, Davenport Police Facility.
- First LEED-certified Commercial Interior – their own office in Iowa City.
- Recipient of Iowa’s first biennial Sustainable Design Awards in 2006.
In all, Schroeder’s work has been acknowledged with seven AIA Iowa Awards in the past four years. He has served on the Iowa Architectural Foundation Board and the editorial board for the award-winning Iowa Architect, for which he recently became editor. Schroeder has given presentations for his alma mater and leads building tours on behalf of the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City Architects Council. His recent community-oriented service activities include the Hickory Hill Park prairie restoration, the City of Coralville’s Iowa River Landing wetland restoration and planting, and the Iowa City tornado clean-up. In 2005 he was recognized for his professional success and community involvement by being named one of the Corridor Business Journal’s “Forty Under 40.” Other projects that Schroeder has led in the area include Plaza Towers, The Vogel House, Joseph’s Steakhouse, The University of Iowa Rowing Team Boathouse and Terry Lockridge & Dunn. Congratulations Tim!
AIA Iowa Members gathered at the Iowa State Capitol on Tuesday, February 26th to talk to their Senators and Representatives about Legislation relevant to Architects and the State of Iowa. There were a total of 39 attendees representing AIA Iowa, including 35 AIA Iowa Members, 3 AIA Iowa Staff Members, and our Lobbyist-Paula Dierenfeld. And, over 150 attended from the Capitol building, including Legislators, Staff Members and Pages.
A great big thank you to the AIA Iowa Members that attended and showed their support! If you were in attendance and your Legislator did attend the open house please email that information to Jessica Reinert, jreinert@aiaiowa.org, for our records. Once again, thank you and we look forward to doing this again in 2009!
'Walk the Walk' - A New Sustainability Campaign for Green Design
The American Institute of Architects announces the launch of 'Walk the Walk,' a multi-faceted campaign to educate, promote and encourage sustainable design among consumers, business owners and architects. The purpose of the program is to help inform the marketplace on the benefits of more energy-efficient homes and buildings, which coincides with the AIA's stated goal of making all buildings carbon neutral by 2030 and helping the U.S. design and construction industry reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in buildings. To advance its efforts in achieving a 50 percent fossil fuel reduction by 2010, the AIA also is implementing a comprehensive communications plan, inclusive of print and online advertising, new media and public relations. "As America continues to be saturated by messages of 'going green,' there is a general lack of understanding that buildings are one of the primary sources of the greenhouse gases contributing to global warming and climate change,'"said Christine McEntee, Executive Vice President and CEO of the AIA.
To achieve its goals, the AIA offers two environmental toolkits:
SustAIAnability 2030 Toolkit
For the 2030 Tool Kit, the AIA partnered with the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) to encourage city leaders to promote high- performance, sustainable building design with a goal of reaching a 50 percent fossil fuel reduction by 2010 and carbon neutral buildings by 2030. The National Association of Counties joined AIA and USCM in advocating these energy reduction goals. The toolkit highlights green building issues and provides samples of effective ordinance language for communities, as well as examples of what others are already doing to pursue green building programs. Access the toolkit online: www.aia.org/static/state_local_resources/adv_sustainability.
50to50 Toolkit
The 50to50 toolkit is a set of 50 strategies, tools and techniques that can have an immediate impact on architects' ability to achieve significant reductions in energy use and carbon emissions for the buildings they design. For example, the 50to50 toolkit recommends designing buildings to maximize passive strategies like incorporating more windows to capitalize on daylight and use less lighting energy. To view the complete list of 50 strategies, please visit www.aia.org/fiftytofifty.

The AIA Iowa Spring Business Meeting will be held at 12 Noon on Thursday, April 10th at the AIA Iowa Spring Conference during lunch at the Scheman Center in Ames.
The agenda will include 2007 & 2008 Financial Reports, Minutes, Committee Reports, Issues Discussion and Awards & Recognition.
Last month, AIA members and staff from all corners of the country gathered in Washington D.C. to discuss legislative issues and particiapte in leadership training. You have the opportunity to view the Session Materials from this conference here.
In addition, Political forecaster Stu Rothenberg of the Rothenberg Political Report spoke about where the 2008 elections were going. He noted that the Congressional Elections would likely result in the Congress remaining the same, but he expressed an interesting opinion. He suggested that the Democratic leadership believes that their majority in Congress is without “mandate for change,” and will continue to be without a mandate until the next election (2008). He then iterated that the mandate of the 2006 and the 2008 elections will be claimed by whichever party wins the White House. Last week (and I stress last week), Rothenberg stated “all things being equal, the democrats will win the White House.” This week the LA Times reported that their polls that Senator McCain holds a slim lead over Senator Clinton and Senator Obama in head-to-head match-ups.
The second presentation of interest was also based on polling numbers, but these were a little bit closer to home. The Tarrance Group presented a look at the issues important to the AIA, with a little twist. They explained the difference between where most architects stand vs. where the American electorate stands on these important issues. Comparing these two viewpoints allows us to fine tune our messages to elected officials and to the general public. It shows where we need to do some education on the issues, and where we are already standing together.
The Architecture Billing Index (ABI) of the AIA reports that design projects may have begun to slow. The end of the year was recorded at a healthy level after a pickup from a slowdown this past summer. January, however, reported a drop by five points in the index, which could be an indicator of a sharp turn in the nonresidential sector. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI shows an approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. “Given the concerns about condition of the overall economy, coupled with a suffering housing market, it is not surprising to see a falloff in demand for architectural services.” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. “This is likely to affect firms that specialize in commercial and industrial projects the most because businesses are expressing growing anxiety over a potential recession and are cutting back on plans for expansion.”
Figures showing 2007 AIA membership versus 2006 AIA membership on the rise. AIA membership has increased four percent, leading to a record number of 83,590 members nationwide. The all-important market penetration among licensed architects also increased to 56 percent. During the past year, nearly 750 Associate members became licensed. The Associate category is the fastest growing constituency, up 11 percent. Associate membership totals 17,669 with nearly 50 percent indicating they are on track for licensure. AIA membership is growing in the right direction!
Great Places is an initiative in Iowa designed to promote bold thought, innovation and entrepreneurship to cultivate the unique and authentic qualities that make places in Iowa so special. The initiative turns the State into a new kind of partner with Iowans—demystifying government, combining resources for impact and delivering results. The Great Places goal is to work in collaboration with local leaders, combine resources and develop the unique aspects that the communities have identified will make them a Great Place.
The communities that were named Great Places in 2007 are:
- Appanoose County
- Charles City
- Council Bluffs
- Davenport
- Decorah
- Perry
- Valley Junction (West Des Moines)
The Legislature is now in session and will be considering funding for the 2007 Great Places communities. Governor Culver did include $2,000,000 for Great Places in this year's budget proposal, but an additional $6,000,000 is needed to fund these projects.
If you live or do work in any of these communities, please be very pro-active with your representatives and senators. Make sure that they are aware of the Great Places designation, are asking questions and monitoring the progress on these funds.
Are you ready for some football? How about a “green” one? And we’re not just talking about the color of the turf ... It seems you cannot open a magazine, turn on the television or radio, surf the Internet, or read a newspaper without being bombarded by references to "green design," "sustainable architecture," or one of the countless environmental initiatives taking place at any one time.
To call sustainable design a movement or a trend would be a gross understatement. There is no doubt, green is here to stay. At the lead of the Green Wave is the AIA, as it should be. The AIA has embraced sustainable design in a big way, from Board policies to the new 2007 AIA Contract Documents® and, now, to the AIA Code of Ethics. As of December 2007, it is the duty of AIA members to learn about sustainable design and advise clients as part of professional practice. This is no better evidenced than by the new revisions to the 2007 Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and the recently released 2007 edition of the AIA Contract Documents. Read the complete article here, AIA Members Strive to Be “Legally and Ethically” Green. by Bill Quatman, Esq., FAIA, and Ryan Manies, Esq., AIA, Shughart Thomson & Kilroy, PC, Kansas City, MO.
Doug Farr, AIA, national chair of the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED for Neighborhood Development Core Committee, proposes that the solution to urban green design is neighborhoods whose planning starts with a commitment to sustainability. "If you want to go green, densify," says Farr, author of the new book Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design With Nature. It's a simple idea-when people live closer together and have schools, jobs and shops nearby, they drive less-but Farr recognizes that it's a hard one to envision for countless Americans accustomed to the spread-out configuration.
Farr's book is a guide to standards and practices, but is also his call to arms. He wants to make architects and planners aware of the crucial role they play in making greener cities a reality. As a big step in that direction, he urges architects to "strive to design one car-free housing project in the next ten years." Story adapted from "The Green Pages" by Dennis Rodkin, Chicago Architect Jan-Feb 08.

The rise of public awareness about the climate and its effect on the building industry sparked the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) to act. A new monograph, titled "Sustainable Design II" by Muscoe Martin, AIA, LEED, and Gregory Franta, FAIA, addresses these concerns and the new developments, tools and techniques for sustainalbe design. U.S. Green Building Council's LEED certification is also a major focus.
Successful completion of the "Sustainable Design II" quiz earns 12 learning units, all AIA health, safety, and welfare. The monograph’s price includes the monograph, the web-based quiz, the score reporting process, and one free retest if needed. Regular price is $275 and NCARB record holder price is $175. Order online at www.ncarb.org/publications/index.html.
IPC, an AIA Iowa Allied member and a Midwest-based precast concrete company, is taking the 2030 challenge seriously. IPC is helping customers meet the challenge head-on by redesigning their wall panel to offer the new high performance “2030 Panel”.
IPC is partnering with Composite Technologies Corporation (CTC) of Boone, Iowa which manufactures and distributes the THERMOMASS® Building Insulation System. This energy-efficient, insulated precast concrete sandwich wall system incorporates THERMOMASS fiber-composite connectors, eliminating thermal bridges and preventing vapor transfer and thermal leakage, reducing a building’s energy costs by as much as 50%. The photo above shows how the Thermomass Solution creates a building envelope without thermal bridges. Note the continuous insulation layer permits no thermal energy loss.
A big benefit to builders interested in green design is THERMOMASS’ contribution to obtaining Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification through the U.S. Green Building Council. The system’s energy efficient attributes may afford a project up to 21 points in five of the six LEED sections. Read the complete article, IPC Rises to 2030 Challenge, here.

Professional Development
In 2007, AIA Iowa provided nearly a dozen opportunities for you to earn LU's and HSW's. These opportunities total more than 63 learning credits through convention, professional development opportunities and the like. This is more than sufficient to meet your licensure requirements and the AIA CES requirements. Plus, AIA Iowa makes it easy for you to earn your LUs. In 2007, we began offering online registration for these events. All you have to do is sign up, show up, and the paperwork is handled for you. To check your LUs, go to AIA.org.

AIA Iowa would like to thank Holmes Murphy and Sika/Sarnafil for sponsoring our March Professional Practice Seminar. Without our sponsors we would not be able to provide these great opportunities to our membership. Thank you!
In the past, the AIA did not have a blanket statement on project delivery. Position Statement No. 26 focused solely on alternative delivery methods. The statement amended by the Board last December now reads:
The AIA believes that every project delivery process must address the quality, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability of our built environment. This can best be affected through industry-wide adoption of an integrated approach to project delivery methodologies characterized by early involvement of owners, designers, constructors, fabricators, and end user/operators in an environment of effective collaboration and open information sharing. The AIA also believes that an architect is well qualified to serve as a leader on integrated project teams. The AIA further believes that evolving project delivery processes require integration of education and practice in design and construction, bith winthin and across disciplines.
Visit the AIA website for more information on Integrated Project Delivery. You can also access the AIA/AIACC's Integrated Project Delivery Guide at www.aia.org/ipdg.

What is a small firm lunch? Practitioners from small firms in Iowa are invited to come to the AIA Iowa office one or two times a month to participate in a one-hour lunch and learn provided by an Allied Member. Because most product and service providers do not do presentations for firms this small, we provide an opportunity for the Allied Member to communicate their product and service to AIA Iowa Members and for AIA Iowa Members to get the knowledge they need within their firm.
How do they work? The presenting Allied Member provides a marketing paragraph for AIA Iowa to include in an announcement that is sent out approximately two weeks prior to the program. RSVP's are collected by AIA Iowa and are due at noon the day prior to the lunch. AIA Iowa then notifies the Allied Member of the number of people signed up. The Allied Member is responsible for ordering the box lunches and drinks for the meeting.
How do I sign-up? Below are the remaining available dates for the Small Firm Lunches in 2008. Please check your calendar and call or email Mindy at 515.244.7502 or mblanchard@aiaiowa.org to reserve a lunch date. Dates are on a first come-first serve basis.
